Research and innovation

Since 2007, the Ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation (MESI), through its Research Support Program - Support for International Research and Innovation Initiatives, has awarded grants to fund some twenty networking and project start-up initiatives as well as collaborative research and innovation projects between Québec and Brazil.

Francophonie

According to a profile published in 2016 by the Observatoire démographique et statistique de l'espace francophone (ODSEF), Brazil has approximately 765,000 speakers and learners who communicate, live and create in French. While it is not an official member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, Brazil shares, in its own way, a number of Francophonie values, which has resulted in various collaborations with Québec institutions, including the promotion of human rights and gender equality. Brazil is one of the 143 States that have ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Each year, the Québec Government Office in São Paulo is actively involved in organizing a series of successful activities with original Québec content at Francophonie celebrations in various cities in Brazil.

Francization

The Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion has signed 16 service agreements with L’Alliance française and another institution in a number of Brazilian cities in order to provide French courses to future immigrants to Québec. Information on Québec is included in the curriculum.

Culture

In 2016, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec reached a collaborative agreement with the Goethe-Institut in Salvador-Bahia, Brazil, with the goal of expanding the international network of workshops/residences for Québec artists and writers.

This collaboration will enable two Québec artists or writers to stay in the Goethe-Institut Salvador-Bahia artists’ residence for two months and develop professional contacts to further their careers.
