Political relations

Bilateral relations have expanded in recent years as a result of a number of missions, visits and meetings, including the following:

  • A mission by the Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation to Port-au-Prince in February 2017 for the swearing in of President Jovenel Moïse
  • A mission to Haiti by the Minister of Culture and Communications in May 2013 and a visit to Montréal by his counterpart in November 2013
  • A meeting between the Premier of Québec and the President of Haiti, Michel Martelly, in October 2012 on the margins of the Sommet de la Francophonie in Kinshasa
  • A mission to Haiti in May 2011 by the Minister responsible for Labour for the swearing-in ceremony of President Michel Martelly
  • A mission by the Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie to Haiti from April 29 to May 1, 2010, to determine how Québec could contribute to the reconstruction of Haiti
  • A meeting between the Prime Minister of Haiti and the Premier of Québec in Montréal in March 2010
  • A mission by the Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie to Haiti from February 9 to 12, 2008
  • Meetings between the Premier of Québec and the President of Haiti, René Préval, during his visits to Québec in May 2006 and October 2008

At the institutional level, Québec and Haiti signed a Déclaration commune de coopération dans les domaines de la culture et des communications in 2008 ( French only). In the area of education, a five-year agreement (French only) on 34 exemptions from higher tuition fees was signed in May 2011 and extended until December 2017.
