Québec’s festivities in Catalonia

Le baryton-basse québécois, Karel Martin Ludvik, accompagné par la pianiste Louise-Andrée Baril.

Québec’s National Holiday was a highly anticipated event this year in Barcelona. On June 21, a number of guests and friends of the Québec Government Office in Barcelona gathered at Moja Palace, an emblematic neoclassical building in the Catalan capital.

A concert of operatic music preceded the reception. Québec bass-baritone Karel Martin Ludvik, one of the outstanding vocal talents of the 2012 Montréal International Musical Competition, made a special trip for the occasion. Close to 150 people attended the event – an exquisite program featuring operatic vocals and piano accompaniment by Louise-Andrée Baril. The exceptional baritone and pianist duo performed compositions by such masters as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Benjamin Britten, Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Johannes Brahms and John Estacio.

During her address, Québec Government Office in Barcelona Director Marjolaine Ricard alluded to the common challenges that Québec and Catalonia are facing:

  • immigration
  • language
  • culture
  • identity
  • governance
  • climate change
  • sustainable development.

Québec’s representative in the Iberian Peninsula also took the opportunity to remind the many professionals who maintain relations with the Québec Government Office in Barcelona that in these difficult times of economic crisis in Spain and Catalonia, Québec would endeavour to support them to the best of its abilities, primarily through the numerous projects implemented as a result of the cooperative ties that have developed between the two governments over nearly 15 years.

“I hope that, together, we will cultivate this invaluable collaboration that will enable us to maintain rich and productive relations marked by maturity, respect, tolerance and openness,” concluded Ms. Ricard before the start of the 2012 Saint-Jean festivities.
