Québec and Mexico celebrate 30 years of cooperation

The Québec-Mexico Working Group (QMWG) celebrated 30 years of cooperation in 2012. Under the joint authority of the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and the Québec Ministère des Relations internationales du Québec, QMWG has become the main instrument for coordinating cooperation activities between the Québec and Mexican administrations.

QMWG is responsible for formulating and implementing a biennial program of cooperation activities, especially in the following sectors:

  • Education
  • Culture
  • Research and innovation
  • Economy

The activities are founded on general and thematic sectoral policies mutually agreed to by the two governments. Projects are selected based on a number of criteria, including the importance of the real benefits of the projects and their positive impact on the social, economic, scientific and cultural development of the two societies.

QMWG funds between 20 and 25 projects every two years. A number of tangible results were achieved during the 2009-2012 quadrennium, including:

  • The development of a joint Master’s degree program in international ecology
  • The development of an innovative process to treat contaminated waste water
  • Research on new natural fibre-based composite plastic materials
  • Valuable exchanges between the Guadalajara International Film Festival and Les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois.

Mexico is a leading international partner for Québec. The common values that have united them since the 1980s have contributed to the growth and dynamism of their institutional relations.

The Québec Government Office in Mexico is constantly seeking occasions to promote the expertise and creativity of Québec entrepreneurs, artists, academics and researchers.
