Québec-China relations focus of UQAM thematic week

China Week, which was held from October 1 to 5, 2012, was organized by the École de langues and the Institut d’études internationales de Montréal at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) with the support of the Ministère des Relations internationales, de la Francophonie et du Commerce extérieur (MRIFCE).

Bolstered by its vast experiencewith such events, the Institut organized this sixth thematic week, after weeks devoted to Japan, Germany, Egypt, Haiti and Brazil. The goal of these weeks isto generate more interactions between the academic communityand culturaland diaspora communities.

Opening ceremony of China Week

Deputy Minister of International Relations, La Francophonie and External Trade Michel Audet gave a speech at the opening ceremony, which brought together HEM Zhang Junsai, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Canada; Zhao Jiangping, the Consul General of China in Montréal; and numerous other guests at Montréal City Hall on October 2.

A diverse program

Numerous activities were on the menu throughout the week, including round tables and a panel on cooperation between Québec and China, in which René Milot, the Coordinator of the Asia Strategy at MRIFCE participated. Mr. Milot also gave an interview on RDI related to his presentation.

Topics on the agenda for this week also included:
  • China and business opportunities
  • Chine, the Arctic and the Plan Nord
  • China and art in Québec
  • China and new prospects in the fields of higher education and tourism

In 2011, China was Québec’s second largest trading partner after the United States, with bilateral trade totalling $10.2 billion. Québec exports to China totalled $2.4 billion, making China Québec’s second largest customer.
