The Québec Government Office in New York (DGQNY) participated in a networking and food product showcasing activity on October 11 at the annual conference of Groundwork USA, whose mission is to build sustainable communities by involving young people.

The event took place on the Science Barge, an awesome floating greenhouse prototype that is powered by renewable energy and that uses no chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

Québec flavours showcased

Several organizations were invited to present their greenhouse products. DGQNY combined organic vegetables from the Science Barge with Québec products to promote Québec know-how. Québec’s Chargée d’affaires ad interim in New York Manon Boucher, as well as the person in charge of the agri-food sector, attended the event.

A booming market!

Québec foodstuff exports to New York State have been booming for several years now, and totalled over $400 million in 2011. The New York market has huge potential for Québec given its proximity.

In addition to numerous partners, the event also attracted:

  • Chuck Lesnick, Yonkers City Council President
  • Rick Magder, Groundwork USA and Groundwork Hudson Valley Executive Director
  • Laura Fahrenthold, Yonkers Green Policy Task Force Coordinator and Groundwork Hudson Valley board member
  • Jennifer Sloan, Groundwork Hudson Valley Science Barge Education Director

Student and best practice exchanges

The Groundwork USA network is a very attractive potential partner for Québec. Moreover, DGQNY looks forward to working actively with this network to encourage the exchange of students and the sharing of best practices in the sustainable urban agriculture sector.

Manon Boucher also met with New York State Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on the floating greenhouse a few days earlier on the occasion of the announcement of American funding for Groundwork Hudson Valley.
