Québec and Catalonia purse their productive cooperation

The governments of Québec and Catalonia renewed their cooperation agreement for the sixth time on October 24 at the 7th meeting of the Joint Québec-Catalonia Cooperation Committee.

The event, which was held in the Palau Centelles in Barcelona, was co-chaired by Jean-Stéphane Bernard, Deputy Assistant Minister for Bilateral Affairs of the Ministère des Relations internationales, de la Francophonie et du Commerce extérieur, and Senén Florensa, Secretary General for Foreign Affairs of Catalonia. The two parties underscored the vitality of their bilateral cooperation and reiterated their mutual desire to pursue and build on it.

The following Québec government representatives also attended, and presented updates on cooperation projects with Catalonia:

  • Marjolaine Ricard, Director, Québec Government Office in Barcelona
  • Jacques Drouin, Chief Electoral Officer of Québec
  • Marie Labelle, Ministère de la Culture et des Communications
  • Abdellah el Mzem, Québec Immigration Office in Paris

The two parties reaffirmed their interest not only in maintaining their cooperative ties but also in expanding them to new sectors and areas that address the concerns of Catalan and Québec societies as well as the challenges facing them.

The Joint Committee examined thirty projects in the areas of culture, language, labour mobility, referenda, economic development and innovation.

At the end of the meeting, the two co-chairs agreed to meet again in Québec City in 2014 for the 8th session of the Joint Committee.
