The ninth edition of the Rostros de la Francofonía (“Faces of La Francophonie”) festival was held in Mexico from March 11 to 23, 2013. In keeping with the values of La Francophonie, which is committed to democracy and free speech, the theme of this year’s festival was “Express yourself freely in French.”

The festival was launched on March 12 at the Québec government office in Mexico City (DGQM) and ended with the reading of a dramatic text by Boris Schoemann, a French actor and theatre director established in Mexico.

This year’s festival was coordinated by the DGQM, which joined with the embassies of Belgium, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, France, Haiti, Morocco and Switzerland, the Lycée Franco-Mexicain, the Federation of Alliances Françaises in Mexico and the Association of Mexican French Teachers and Researchers (AMIFRAM) to celebrate the French language and francophone cultures.

Over a 12-day period, a wide array of activities, most of them free-of-charge, were an opportunity for the Mexican public to discover different facets of francophone cultures through theatre and music, photography and the visual arts, books, lectures, roundtables and debates. The cultural program for the festival included screenings at the Cineteca Nacional of 12 films portraying life in francophone countries.

The festival coincided with the Grand Concours de la Francophonie, a contest aimed at French-language students in Mexico. The winners were awarded seven trips to France and Québec during the Grande Fête des Arts et de la Francophonie, a celebration of the arts and La Francophonie held at the Lycée Franco-Mexicain, in Mexico City’s Polanco district.
