Two Québec troupes were invited to the very first São Paulo International Circus Festival, which was organized by the Serviço Social do Comércio de São Paulo (SESC-SP), a not-for-profit Brazilian institution that supports social and cultural endeavours.

The event, which was held from May 2 to 12, brought together six circus companies from around the world as well as nearly twenty Brazilian troupes. Québec’s participation was a joint initiative of the Québec Government Office in São Paulo (BQS) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).

Enthusiastic reception…

The multidisciplinary company L’Arsenal presented its show The Ark, a reference to Noah’s Ark, to an enthusiastic São Paulo public. Nature figured prominently in the show through a series of surprising virtual landscapes. Élise Racicot, the Director of the Québec Government Office in São Paulo, who attended the premiere of the show, expressed her appreciation: “Your presence in Brazil strengthens our ties with our Brazilian partners and confirms Québec’s expertise and creativity in the theatre arts.”

The Montréal troupe Les Parfaits Inconnus then took to the stage to give a show seamlessly mixing live music, circus arts and comedy. Le Retour tells the story of a gypsy circus family dealing with the fact that no one goes to their performances.

A representative of SESC-SP discovered this amazing circus company at Biennale Cinars in November 2012 and invited them to perform at the Brazilian festival.

Interested partners

In addition to the shows, several debates and workshops were on the festival program, including one on the positioning of the circus market.

The Artistic Director of Les Parfaits Inconnus, with help from Québec Office representatives, had the opportunity to meet various Brazilian festival programmers interested in inviting Québec artists to their events.

SESC-SP will be attending the Montréal complètement cirque Festival this coming July with the aim of strengthening ties between Québec and Brazil.

The mission of the Québec Government Office in São Paulo since it opened in March 2008 has been to promote Québec in Brazil and support Québec companies wishing to do business or find new partners there.
