Québec university summer schools: acquiring a unique international education

Québec universities offer summer courses in the form of conferences, symposia, intensive weeks, panels, etc. to students and professionals interested in international affairs.

Some places are still available in the finance, democratization and elections, international trade and languages programs.

Université du Québec à Montréal - UQAM
  • Democratization and elections – The case of Burundi
    (Monday, June 10, 6:00 p.m.)
    Opening conference of the Consolidation de la paix summer school organized by the Raoul-Dandurand Chair and the UQAM Faculty of Political Science and Law.

    Projection of the documentary “Demokarasi” followed by a discussion-debate with journalist François Bugingo and the film’s director Marie-Claude Dupont.
  • Trading in a multipolar world
    (August 15 to 24, 2013)
    Organized jointly by UQAM and ENAP, the summer school on international relations will address trade issues and major international trade agreements.

    The themes tackled by the speakers, notably Bernard Landry, Christian Deblock (UQAM) and Stéphane Paquin (ENAP), during this 2nd edition will highlight the 25th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement and will deal in more detail with the problems related to the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Université de Sherbrooke
  • The sovereign debt crisis: Canadian and European intersectional approaches
    (June 10 and 11 at the Longueuil campus)
    A number of themes will be addressed during this conference, including the debt crisis and its effects on markets, the new monetary theory, justice and sovereign debt, the failure of contemporary models and alternative solutions.

    Twenty-five speakers from Canada and Europe, including lawyers, economists and political scientists, will be making presentations.

  • Third World Forum of Language Centres in Higher Education HÉRACLES
    (June 12 to 14, 2013)
    This symposium will address ways to integrate the new realities of the internationalization of education and research into university policies and programs.

McGill University
  • International Summer Program – Faculty of Management
    (July 2 to 6, 2013)
    This summer session offers two courses, Managing in North America and Global Branding. The application deadline is April 30, 2013. However, acceptance depends on the number of available places. Applicants should contact the university to find out whether it is still possible to apply.

Université Laval
  • Summer language schools
    (July and August 2013)
    The Université Laval École de langues offers a wide range of regular and intensive courses for beginners and more advanced students alike. Place are still available in English and Spanish courses.

Université de Montréal - CÉRIUM
  • Seven seminars on international issues
    (July 8 to 13, 2013)
    In collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Law, the Centre for International Studies and Research at UdeM (CÉRIUM) will be offering seven seminars this summer:

    - The Scandinavian model: tools for success
    - Democracy at a turning point
    - Diplomacy, defence and international security
    - Natural resources: a planet in your hands
    - Canadian and Québec Aboriginal literature
    - The United States caught up in today’s crises
    - Fragile states, conflicts and interventions: Focus on the Malian crisis

    These intensive six-day summer schools each feature about ten experts. People can sign up for a full week or a single day.
