New York State: Québec’s main American partner

Economic growth was the theme of the talk given by Québec Delegate General in New York André Boisclair at the Lake Placid Institute in August.

The roundtable, which attracted over fifty participants, gave the Delegate General the opportunity to mention the productive relationship between New York State and Québec in the economic, technological, scientific and cultural spheres.

His speech entitled “Québec-New York Relations: Over and Above the Border“ served to highlight the importance of a secure border offering as few restrictions as possible to the free movement of people and goods. Mr. Boisclair also expressed the desire to see cultural relations with the north of the State develop even further, for example in the form of exchanges of artists.

New York State, a go-to market

New York State is Québec’s main trading partner in the United States. The total value of trade topped CAD $8 billion in 2011. At nearly CAD $6 billion, exports to New York State made up 14% of all Québec exports to the United States and nearly 10% of international exports.

Trade and investment, energy, the environment and security are just a few of the sectors of mutual interest shared by Québec and New York State. In addition, New York City is home to one of the largest financial markets in the world where some Québec provincial bonds are issued.
