Mission to Africa generates highly positive results: 44 agreements signed

Jean-François Lisée, Minister of International Relations, La Francophonie and External Trade, wrapped up a one-week mission to West Africa on September 14, in Burkina Faso. He was accompanied on the mission by over a hundred representatives of businesses, institutions, civil society and international solidarity organizations.

According to the Minister, “This first multisector mission — the largest Québec government mission to Africa so far — was highly positive. A total of 44 commercial and institutional agreements were signed.”

“There are already strong ties between Québec and French-speaking Africa. We are now ready to shift into high gear. We’re at the results stage. As shown by the diversity of our delegation, the favourable economic and political context in Africa means numerous business opportunities aligned with Québec’s commercial and institutional capacities.”

Nineteen agreements in Burkina Faso

In addition to 19 business and trade agreements signed in Burkina Faso, Expansion Québec opened its second African office, in Ouagadougou, the national capital. The office will provide support for Québec companies that want to do business in Burkina Faso and other West African countries.

Jean-François Lisée met with President Blaise Compaoré and discussed potential cooperation projects for deployment over the coming months:

  • Training (mining industry trades)
  • Solar energy
  • Telecommunications (Internet access in remote areas)

The meeting also focused on support from Québec’s Directeur général des élections (DGE) for the implementation of a permanent administrative structure for Burkina Faso’s independent national electoral commission (CENI).
