Minister Lisée took advantage of his presence in New York City for an informal ministerial consultation of the International Organisation of the Francophonie (IOF) to give fresh momentum to relations between Québec and the State of New York.

Minister Lisée represented the Government of Québec at the Francophone ministerial consultation, which was held on the sidelines of the session of the United Nations General Assembly, a first, as allowed by Québec’s status as a full-fledged IOF member.

The Minister’s interventions focussed on:

  • The democratic transition in Egypt, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mali
  • The resolution of crises and conflicts
  • The role of the Francophonie in the defence of women’s rights

His presence also gave him an opportunity to hold discussions with the Minister Delegate for the Francophonie attached to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Yamina Benguigui. The Minister also took the opportunity to continue the dialogue begun with his African counterparts during his most recent mission to Africa.

Productive discussions

His trip to New York City enabled the Minister to hold a series of high-level political and economic meetings aimed at strengthening ties between Québec and New York. This state is Québec’s largest trading partner in the United States.

He held discussions with Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy, with whom he touched on a number of questions related to the economy, energy and the environment. The Minister also emphasized the importance that Québec attaches to the electrification of transportation and promoted the benefits of Québec hydroelectricity as a source of clean and renewable energy during talks with the Chairman of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Richard L. Kauffman.

Lastly, Mr. Lisée met with the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Thomas Prendergast, and praised the dynamism and expertise of Québec companies in the transportation sector in the United States.

These meetings revealed the extent to which Québec is considered a reliable and dynamic partner by senior New York State officials.
