Québec translators at Sochi Games

Janick Roy, Julien Gagnon, Ilia Krouglikov and Valeriya Lezhankina

Four young Québec professionals are part of the team responsible for providing translation and interpretation services at the Sochi Winter Games.

Thanks to a contribution by organizations including the Ministère des Relations internationales, de la Francophonie et du Commerce extérieur (MRIFCE), Les Offices jeunesse internationaux du Québec (LOJIQ), the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), and the Québec government office in Paris, translators Janick Roy, Julien Gagnon, Ilia Krouglikov and Valeriya Lezhankina are in Sochi along with 18 other young francophone professionals and translator/interpreters from France, Belgium and Switzerland.

All told, over a thousand professional and volunteer translators and interpreters are hard at work during the Games.

Their role is provide athletes, officials and journalists with language services. In carrying out their duties, the francophone team members help make sure that the French language is heard and used in Sochi.

More specifically, their duties consist in:

  • translating the Sochi Games website, written announcements and documents (from English to French and, where possible, from Russian to French)
  • drafting documents
  • providing interpretation services to facilitate dialogue between various stakeholders (media, athletes, medical personnel, doping control personnel, etc.)
