Québec to be guest of honour at Showcase Scotland

Showcase Scotland, an annual high-profile venue for traditional Scottish music, has selected Québec as this year’s guest of honour. The event will take place at the end of the month in Glasgow in conjunction with Celtic Connections, Scotland’s biggest traditional music festival. Six groups will be performing for a Scottish audience and some 200 delegates, broadcasters, theatrical agents and distributers during an event dubbed Spotlight Québec.

The groups representing Québec are La Bottine Souriante, Le Vent du Nord, Yves Lambert and the Bébert Orchestra, Genticorum, Galant tu perds ton temps and Les Chauffeurs à pied. Québec Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women, Christine St-Pierre, will likewise take part in the event.

Québec’s involvement in Showcase Scotland is part of a marketing operation that also plans to promote about thirty traditional music groups from Québec in the UK.

The Délégation générale du Québec à Londres (Québec Government Office in London) is collaborating with the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine, SODEC (society for the development of cultural ventures) and CALQ (Québec council for the arts and literature), which support Québec’s participation in this important festival. SPDTQ (society for the promotion of traditional Québec dance) and FolQuébec are associated with the event as well.

“Our artists are marvellous ambassadors. They create an awareness of and appreciation for Québec culture the world over. On their behalf, I wish to thank the organizers of Showcase Scotland for the place of honour that this major festival has accorded to Québec’s traditional music artists this year. I greatly appreciate this acknowledgement of our culture and will be pleased and proud to participate in the event along with them,” said Minister Christine St-Pierre.
