Orizzonte Biennial : Québec is bursting with energy !

Québec Government Office in Rome recently unveiled a wide-ranging program of events for the 2010 Orizzonte Québec Biennial. From September to December, some 40 cultural activities involving Québec companies, artists and artisans will be held in major Italian cities, including Bologna, Milan, Rome, Turin and Venice

“Over the past 12 years, the Orizzonte Québec Biennial has provided Québec Government Office in Rome with a wonderful opportunity to present Québec’s tradition of artistic excellence to the Italian public and to forge stronger ties with Italy. In addition, we have assisted and collaborated with organizations and distributors involved in bringing Québec’s cultural productions to Italy and promoting them around the country,” said Amalia Daniela Renosto, Québec’s Delegate in Rome.

“Il Québec sprizza energia!” (“Québec is bursting with energy!”) provides the central theme for this edition of the Orizzonte Québec Biennial, which will showcase a variety of cultural activities and offer a panoramic view of cultural creation in Québec.

In the spotlight: theatre

Theatre will be one of the main components of the Orizzonte Québec Biennial thanks to the triumphant return of Wajdi Mouawad, who kicked off the inaugural edition of the event in 1998. This fall, he will be presenting the Italian premiere of his play Incendies (Scorched) as part of the prestigious Romaeuropa Festival.

Lorraine Pintal and Jean-Daniel Lafond’s production of La Déraison d’amour (The Irrationality of Love), dedicated to Marie Guyard (Mother Mary of the Incarnation), will be staged at Milan’s Piccolo Teatro. The main character will be played by renowned Québec actress Marie Tifo.

Keen interest in the new generation

The 2010 Orrizonte Québec Biennial will place special emphasis on the new generation, as well as on innovation and change in terms of both content and technique. A number of younger Québec cultural practitioners who have already gained international distinction will be featured, including:

  • Arcade Fire
  • Simple Plan
  • The musicians of Québec Jazz
  • Young contemporary dance choreographers such as Virginie Brunelle

The 2010 Orizzonte Québec Biennial will also feature artists from the following fields:

  • Cinema
  • Circus arts
