Québec City theatre company performs Chekhov in São Paulo

As part of the festivities surrounding the 150th anniversary of the birth of Russian author Anton Chekhov, Québec City’s Théâtre du Trident performed Three Sisters in Brazil. The production was directed by Wajdi Mouawad.

From December 17 to 19, the Québec theatre company performed Chekhov’s classic at the SESC-Pinheiros theatre before an enthusiastic audience of close to 1,500 people. The performances were co-produced by Serviço Social do Comércio de São Paulo (SESC-SP), Théâtre du Trident, the Chekov International Theatre Festival and Abé Carré Cé Carré, with support from the Québec government office in São Paulo (BQSP).

SESC-SP held a public discussion with Gill Champagne, artistic director of Théâtre du Trident. The Brazilian audience showed a keen interest in how the Québec City theatre company works and in Québec in general. The Brazilian television network TV Cultura broadcast a report on the performances and an interview with Wajdi Mouawad.

The BQSP helped promote the performances among francophones and francophiles. Several partners were invited to the premiere, including the president of the association of French teachers of the state of São Paulo and the assistant to the vice-rector of international relations at Universidade de São Paulo. Louis Hamann and Roberta Lara of the BQSP also took the opportunity to meet and speak with the Brazilian producers and the SESC-SP team.
