Minister Gagnon-Tremblay on mission to Europe

Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for La Francophonie, is in Europe from June 14 to 27. Her mission will take her to Russia, France and Italy.

Russia

From June 16 to 18, the Minister will attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). This is the third participation by a Québec cabinet minister in the annual event. Described as an “Eastern Davos,” SPIEF brings together high-level economic personalities. According to Minister Gagnon-Tremblay, “This Forum is essential for the Government of Québec, which wants to bolster its links and positioning in Russia, one of the big emerging economies.”

During her mission, the Minister will meet with representatives of Russian regions, which are a natural gateway to the country for Québec. The trip to Russia will also be an opportunity to promote Québec’s Plan Nord (“Northern Plan”) among potential partners and investors.

France

On June 20, the Minister will give a speech at the opening of a symposium on the French language and emerging countries, one of the activities held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Québec Government Office in Paris. Organized in partnership with the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Fondation de l’Alliance française and the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), the symposium will attract well-known intellectuals in a variety of fields, who will reflect on the place reserved for French in a context of new demographic dynamics and a changing global economy.

Prior to her speech, at the invitation of Abdou Diouf, Secretary General of La Francophonie, the Minister will unveil a commemorative plaque presented by Québec in memory of a great Quebecer, Jean-Marc Léger, during the official opening of a room named after him at the new OIF headquarters. Minister Gagnon-Tremblay will take advantage of the event to meet with the Secretary General.

Her stop in Paris will also be an opportunity for her to focus on matters of shared interest with France, such as occupational mobility, and multilateral issues such as cultural diversity. Along with Henri de Raincourt, French Minister for Cooperation under the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Minister Gagnon-Tremblay will co-chair the third meeting of the bilateral committee on the Québec-France understanding on the mutual recognition of professional competence. She will also meet with Alain Jupé, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, and Luc Chatel, Minister of National Education.

Italy

After France, Minister Gagnon-Tremblay will visit Italy, where she will take part in a Québec National Holiday celebration in Rome. The event will be attended by various Québec partners from the Italian peninsula.
