New prize for the best tour across Canada and the United States

The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) has just announced that, beginning in 2012, it will award the Prix pour la meilleure tournée au Canada et aux États-Unis to an organization that stood out by the exceptional quality of a tour across Canada or the United States or both. This new biennial prize, which comes with a $10,000 cheque, will be presented at the Bourse RIDEAU event in February 2012.

“CALQ is very proud of this new prize, which recognizes the exceptional quality of tours by Québec companies and which encourages the promotion of art productions outside Québec. The dissemination of Québec works beyond its borders plays a major role in raising awareness of Québec,” said CALQ President and Chief Executive Officer Yvan Gauthier.

Tours outside Québec are an especially important focus for CALQ, which awarded $3,500,000 in grants last year for 117 tours. These tours not only provide essential income and new audiences for most of these companies, they often also provide recognition for their work. Canada and the United States are major natural markets for Québec companies.

The prize is intended for non-profit, professional organizations that produce shows and that are eligible for CALQ programs in the following areas: circus arts, multi-disciplinary arts, dance, literature and folktales (literature or folktale shows), music, and theatre. Organizations can nominate themselves or accept nominations from third parties. They must register using the official nomination form. The deadline for filing nominations is January 20, 2012.
