    La Francophonie Day of Discovery in Tokyo

    Over 150 people, mostly university students, participated in the La Francophonie Day of Discovery at Waseda University in Tokyo on December 13. This was the first event organized by the Council for the promotion of the Francophonie in Japan, an initiative encouraged by the Québec Government Office in Tokyo earlier this year.

    Japan: Minister Arcand is the first foreign dignitary received by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs

    On mission to Japan, Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie Pierre Arcand met with the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Koichi Takemasa. This marks Mr. Takemasa’s first meeting with a foreign diplomat since the election of the new Hatoyama government on August 30, 2009.

    A call for closer Québec-Japan scientific collaboration

    Currently on mission to Japan, Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie Pierre Arcand stressed the “importance for Québec’s academic institutions and scientific research community to act on existing collaborative R&D opportunities in Japan. Québec has expertise in certain scientific sectors that should be promoted in Japan and also stands to benefit from technological transfers in a number of complementary research sectors.”

    Video Games: turning on the charm in Japan

    During his official mission to Japan from September 22 to October 1, the Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, Pierre Arcand, will attend the Tokyo Game Show to support Québec’s video game development industry in its prospecting efforts among the world’s foremost players in the field.

    Québec-Japan meeting

    Strengthening economic ties between Québec and Japan topped the agenda at the meeting between Pierre Arcand, Minister of International Relations and Minister Responsible for La Francophonie, and Hiroaki Isobe, Japan’s new Consul General in Montréal, on April 30 in Québec City. During his first official visit to the capital, Mr. Isobe also met with Premier Jean Charest and several members of his government, as well as with other Québec political figures.

    Québec and Japan sign second nanotechnology agreement

    Close to 100 people, including a number of representatives of Québec companies and research centres, attended the official signing of a cooperation agreement between NanoQuébec and Nagano Techno Foundation, in Nagano on February 16. The agreement is aimed at promoting nanotechnology development. The Délégation générale du Québec à Tokyo (Québec government office in Tokyo) was also represented at the signing ceremony, held during Nanotechnology Week in Japan.
