    China: a growing market

    After Japan, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Pierre Corbeil, continued his Asian mission in China, a country that offers huge development potential for Québec agri-food products. The Chinese are the world’s largest consumers of pork. However, it is currently impossible for the Chinese agricultural community to increase production to meet the growing demand. “This mission to China is very important for Québec companies. By developing a sustainable business relationship, they can maximize their opportunities to take advantage of this rapidly expanding market,” said Mr. Corbeil.

    Discussions with Michèle Stanton-Jean

    Michèle Stanton-Jean, Québec Government Representative within the Permanent Delegation of Canada to UNESCO, was pleased to accept an invitation from the Secretariat on the Status of Women to mark International Women’s Day. The event highlighted the 30th anniversary of the first publication of L'Histoire des femmes au Québec depuis quatre siècles, a 400-year history of women in Québec.

    Mission to Paris by Premier Jean Charest

    Québec Premier Jean Charest ended a three-day mission to Paris on March 16 with a lecture at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI). He addressed an audience of about 200 people on the topic “Québec on the international scene: issues and perspectives.”

    Francophone Days in Rome

    The Commissioner General of the first French Language World Forum, Michel Audet, opened a panel discussion entitled “Le langage des jeunes, c koi?” (the language of young people, what’s that?) in Rome on March 21. The event was organized in conjunction with Francophone Days in Rome by the heads of Francophone missions in Rome. Québec Government Representative in Rome Amalia Daniela Renosto is a member of the group. Mr. Audet took the opportunity afforded by the panel to inform the Roman Francophones and Francophiles in attendance about the Forum’s program by outlining the event’s major issues and highlights.

    La Francophonie celebrated in Tokyo and Kobe

    Over 500 people attended the International Francophonie celebration held at the French-Japanese Institute in Tokyo. The event, which had to be cancelled last year because of the earthquake in Japan, proved very popular with the Japanese public. The Québec Government Office in Tokyo set up an information booth and promoted Québec cranberries – a natural product that is highly-sought after by the Japanese.

    Symposium on the integration of immigrants in urban areas

    Since immigrant integration is an issue common to a number of countries, a symposium on the integration of immigrants in urban areas was organized by the Canadian Embassy and the Mission to the European Union, in collaboration with the Québec Government Office in Brussels and the King Baudouin Foundation. The symposium was an opportunity to share good practices in this regard and compare the situation in five cities: Antwerp, Brussels, Verviers, Toronto and Montréal.

Keynote speeches, networking, dialogue and partnerships were on the agenda at the eighth edition of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) Conference and Exhibition.

    Deputy Premier François Gendron goes to Rome and the Vatican

    The Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), François Gendron, was on a mission to Rome and the Vatican from March 18 to 20 as Québec’s representative at the Holy Mass for the beginning of the Petrine Ministry of His Holiness Pope Francis.
