Government of Québec announces disaster relief for southeast Asia

Québec City, December 28, 2004 - Deputy Premier and Minister of International Relations Monique Gagnon-Tremblay and Minister of Relations with the Citizens and Immigration Michelle Courchesne today announced a $100,000 contribution to the Québec section of the Red Cross to help the people in south and southeast Asia affected by the tsunami.

“Quebecers were profoundly shocked by the scope of the catastrophe and the loss of human life,” said the Vice Premier, who added that “when such a disaster occurs, we have a duty to help those in distress.”

“A tragedy of these proportions touches all Quebecers, and the government is very aware of the ordeal facing the families of various communities in Québec directly affected by the disaster,” added the Minister of Relations with the Citizens and Immigration.

The contribution by the Government of Québec comes from the International Development Program administered by the Ministère des Relations internationales. The program provides emergency assistance for countries affected by natural disasters.
