20th Conference of Montreal – The Premier of Québec presents his government’s economic and political vision

QUÉBEC CITY, June 12, 2014 - At the close of the International Economic Forum of the Americas - Conference of Montreal, Québec Premier Philippe Couillard noted that the event enabled the new government to present its policies that will contribute to Québec’s prosperity.

“The program’s breadth and the quality of the speakers were instrumental in the success of this 20th edition of the Conference of Montreal, as was the case for previous editions. I had an opportunity to outline two ambitious projects that will open Québec to the world and at the same time create jobs throughout its regions. Re-launching the Plan Nord in all its economic, social and environmental aspects and implementing the Maritime Strategy form an integral part of our vision for fostering Québec’s growth,” said the Premier.

The Premier was invited to speak at the opening luncheon, whose theme was Towards the Next Era of Growth. The Minister of Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion, Kathleen Weil, and the Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, Christine St-Pierre, also took part in the conference.

Minister St-Pierre made the introductory remarks at the forum entitled Economic Francophonie: Outlook and Challenges. “I am extremely pleased by the economic ambitions of La Francophonie. They broaden the scope of action of this great multilateral institution of which Québec is a full-fledged member. We want an economic Francophonie oriented towards sustainable and equitable development that fosters job creation for young people and women. This topic will be at the heart of the next Francophonie Summit, scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal, this fall,” she said.

Minister Kathleen Weil, together with the Premier, participated in a forum on international mobility as well as on diversity, innovation and productivity. “This forum afforded an occasion to reiterate how important it is in a globalized economy for Québec to attract and retain the best talent,” she stated. “Québec possesses major economic assets. As the Premier noted, this is reflected in the deployment of the Plan Nord. We also anticipate making major changes soon to our immigration system that would include actively involving businesses. This move will be decisive for Québec’s economic growth,” she added.

While at the event, Premier Couillard engaged in discussions with influential members of the economic and political communities. He met with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who was awarded an honorary doctorate from Université de Montréal. In the company of Minister St-Pierre, he met with the Administrator of the International Organization of La Francophonie, Clément Duhaime.

Minister St-Pierre also met with the Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Angel Gurría, and the Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology of the State of Jalisco, Mexico, Jaime Reyes Robles.

The theme of the 20th Conference of Montreal was The Foundation for the Next Era of Growth. The event attracted over 3,000 participants from the business, political and academic communities.
